About the Artist
Carl Yonder is a surrealist painter and illustrator who lives and works in Montgomery County, Maryland. Inspired by sensory deprivation float experiences and lifelong travelling, Yonder’s work reflects his own journey through the subconscious serving as a conduit explorer discovering ancient cultures, rituals from prehistory and esoteric beliefs.
Recently, he won the Curator’s Choice Award in December 2020 for his work at the Brooklyn, New York-based Greenpoint Gallery. He also had exhibitions with the I Like Your Work podcast, the Congruence 2020 summer show, 2019’s Big Bold and Beautiful II, 2020’s Delaplaine Pops! Group show, in addition to a solo exhibition at the Best Medicine Rep Theater Company in 2018.
Artist Statement
As a private person, Carl Yonder is naturally less inclined to speak to the specific meaning of his art. Speaking to specific meanings and intentions of the art will only work against any deeper meaning they convey to you the viewer. It will limit it to something that you either ‘get’ or ‘don’t.’
Art is about meaningful connections, so Yonder offers a key, not instructions or directions, but a key that can be used to provide a frame of reference when viewing his work;
Imagine you are an archaeologist trying to piece together a narrative of an ancient explorer’s journey through the subconscious.
